Dior Cruise 2018 Hair and Makeup
Last season it was leather berets in Paris, this season it was Western-inspired hats against the backdrop of the Santa Monica mountains. It's safe to say Dior's Maria Grazia Chiuri isn't afraid to show hat hair on the runway. But the hair at the 2018 Cruise show wasn't just brushed and tucked under the brim—it was styled into the prettiest rumpled, low braid.

Backstage at the show, the models had their hair set into small, tight ringlets. Once cool, the rumpled curls were then pulled back and braided starting at the shoulders-down. The braid was secured at the end with a tiny black ribbon tied into a bow. Then a bandana was added across the forehead before being topped with one of the turquoise-adorned hats.

The makeup look, at first glance, appeared to be yet another iteration of Dior's preference for natural, fresh skin. But there was a whole lot more going on than meets the eye. For one thing, red eyeshadow was a key part of the look. The makeup was described backstage as "streamlined and sunny, inspired from the rich colors of the Californian desert." Makeup artist Peter Phillips channeled this in the most subtle way by sweeping colors from the Dior 5 Couleurs palette in Inflame 767 across the models' lids.

The shadow in the very center of the palette, the warm hue of red clay, was brushed along the top lashline. A similar bright red flush on the cheeks—and a touch of bronzer—gave the models a soft, sunkissed appearance, as if they had been frolicking in the desert all day. Filled-in brows and freshly-scrubbed lips completed the not-quite-natural makeup look.
